Since 1891, it has only snowed five times on Christmas in Seattle.
The last Christmas Day snow was in 1990 (those here will remember that infamous arctic outbreak). Most of the snow fell earlier, but we did manage 0.8" on Christmas. Before that, we had an inch in 1965, a dusting in 1944 and 1915, and about 2" in 1909.
For more recent events: The big snowstorm in 1996 didn't start until Dec.26, and we did manage 2" on Christmas Eve in 1998 but it melted before Santa could arrive.
I just got back from what could only be described as a snow globe run. It's not sticking much, but the falling flakes are beautiful.
The average high temperature for Seattle in July is around 75 degrees. Yesterday, we hit 95 degrees. Today, it's expected to be 92. The problem with these temps is that almost nobody in Seattle has air conditioning in their homes.
We kept our place at about 80 degrees yesterday by shutting everything up early in the morning, right after we strategically placed fans to pull the cooler air in. We are doing the same thing this morning.
Last year, we installed a ceiling fan in our bedroom. This was one of these "why didn't we think of this sooner" projects. It makes a huge difference. We were actually pretty comfortable last night.
The other thing I thought of was chillows. I work with a guy that laughs about these (the product name gets him), but I think they look like a good idea. Anyone out there use chillows?
