My Grandfather passed away when I was 5 and I only have very fragmented memories of him. Here he is on Easter in 1960 - the only photo I had of him (I am the little girl in the background on the right):
These are photos of him in the early 1930s at Pine Lake, where he built a family cottage:
I feel like this is some special glance into my Grandfather that I never had before. I just never imagined him "goofing around" but clearly he's having a lot of fun here. In the photo above, the man who has his arm around him is Dr. Werner (Nels Sr), father of Nels (Jr) who is gazing at my Aunt Amy in the photo from my previous post (below). The Werners had the cottage next door at Pine Lake (that's how Amy and Nels met). My Dad and Uncle Carl are the boys in the front.
On Thursday, I am going to the family lake cottage built by my grandfather in the 1920s. He died when I was only five years old, so I have almost no memory of him. The single memory I do have is when I left my little white purse at this house. When he returned it, it had a mustard-seed bracelet inside. I still have both the bracelet and the envelope the bracelet was in; on the envelope he wrote "To Heidi, Love, Grandfather."
Going to the cottage I will somehow feel as close to my grandfather as I can get.
