We're having my cousin Elise and her husband Gordon over for dinner tomorrow night, who split their time between Seattle and upstate New York. For both Thanksgiving and Christmas they are in New York (with about a week back in Seattle in between). So, for the past several years, we've had them over for a holiday dinner in early December before they return to New York.

Right after work today, I did shopping for the dinner in our little neighborhood, which I had forgotten was doing their annual "Holiday Magic" festival. The streets were jumping with people, music, lights, and... roasting chestnuts...
While I was grocery shopping, Drake went over to the neighborhood tree lot and picked out our Christmas tree. Our place has 9" ceilings so we can go with a big tree. He picked out a beaut!
In my family growing up, it was our tradition to decorate the tree on my birthday (Dec. 19). I've carried through that tradition for most of my adult life. But a couple of years ago when we tried to buy our tree on the 19th there were basically no more trees left at our local lot. A search ensued, which resulted in finding only a kind of crappy Christmas tree. Of course, we called it our Charlie Brown Christmas tree, and loved it, and decorated it - but also decided that it would probably be less stress and hassle to just get and decorate our tree earlier.
And so that is what we did today. Here is my very first Vox video showing the transformation of our tree. It's a bit of an experiment; I'm not sure how well this will translate to the web.
[Edited] The video didn't really work at all - I might try to upload via YouTube. In the mean time, here is a photo of the finished product.
