So young

Has it gone slightly red? Photoshop's automatic color corrector seems to have a good handle on the typical things that have gone wrong with older prints, and I usually at least see what it wants to do (one can always Step Backward).

Nothing against the photo! It's a really good portrait, but if you're doing a lot of scanning now, it's something to think about. I've gone through a huge stack of old slides and photos and am still learning things about PhotoShop.
Wow, thanks for the tip! Yes, you are absolutely right - it had quite a bit of color shift. I posted a color-corrected version. I had never even noticed the "auto" adjustments - I did quite a bit of Photoshop work ~8 years ago but the levels, color balance, etc. were manually done only and quite a bit of fussing involved.

I start my scanning today - so far I've just been organizing and gathering the photos up. So your advice was just in time!
Something else extremely helpful that I've come across lately is this: It's often the case that some areas of a photo are darker than you'd like them to be. Go to Enhance, then Adjust Brightness/Contrast, then Levels. It'll show you a little histogram with some pointers under it that you can adjust. Go to the center one, and drag it a bit to the left, and watch the too-dark areas of your photos magically brighten up!

Lastly, of course, you definitely want to save all this effort you've put in, and for that I've gotten myself a pro account at Flickr. Once you're done, upload 'em. Then you never have to worry about losing your hard drive.
It must be great to look at old photos like that. They evoke a lot of memories.
Wow, auto-levels on old B&W photos is amazing! I spent the afternoon yesterday with my cousin scanning. Thanks for the tip on adjusting the darkness - I have one such photo of my dad and uncle as boys - great shot of my dad but my uncle is too dark. I'll give that a whirl. And great tip on Flickr pro. After my recent hard drive failure I'm a bit paranoid - I've got backup CD but think I'll be double-safe and have online storage for them as well.

The photos I think really look good with the correction work - my Dad is going to be so surprised!
It's the greatest. You build up a big library on there, then start sending around emails: hey, click here for all the family photos! Pretty soon you have a new family job... they think photos, they think Heidi. It's not so bad.
Yes...I could see this snow-balling. I am the youngest and most techy amongst the cousins my father's side - it seems a natural fit!
