Remember "The Thing"?
When I was in high school, there was a family in my neighborhood with a yellow VW Thing. I rode in it a couple of times - it was pretty cool - at the time there was nothing like it on the market (it was kind of a proto-SUV).
Today, at Gas Works Park, there was a gathering of Things. So, after my ride, I checked them out. They were having a raffle: the prize - a toy VW Thing - just we need - so I passed on that. But the Thing people seemed like a friendly bunch and they were clearly having a great time.

there was a kid in HS that had an orange one- very cool ride.
I remember the Thing!! I had a friend in HS who had a yellow one and we went all over in it. Sooo many of my friends had VWs...the Squarebacks were my favorite.
Your blog makes me terribly homesick btw. I lived in Seattle for a few years a while back and always always miss it.
My family had a Squareback and then a 412. I drove the 412 in high school as "my" car. My first car out of college was a Rabbit (Diesel!). Those older VWs bring back memories!
My first car was a diesel Rabbit too!! I went to college in Spokane (Withworth) and had the worst time trying to find a place to plug it in during the winter...no one else plugged their car in so they just didn't have anything arranged for that. :)
I had my diesel in Missoula, MT for five years - yeah, plugging was an issue.
