My mom treated every first of the month as a holiday, greeting us in the morning with "Happy [whatever month] 1st!". Though she is always in my thoughts, the first of the month brings special memories of her first-of-the-month greeting.
My mother did that too. She had a special talent for making ordinary holidays into mini-extravaganzas, and making holidays where none previously existed -- trips to the doctor or dentist became their own holidays, and the brave patient was always taken to the bookstore afterwards (or after recovering!) to pick out a Doctor/Dentist Day book.
Profesora, how fun to have all those impromptu holidays!
Of course I'm biased, but my mom was such a great lady. One of these days I am going to post a bit about her childhood - she was orphaned during the depression but eventually was adopted by a single (brilliant) woman who was one of the first female attorneys in the state of Illinois. It was a very unusual upbringing for the time.
HP, that's more than a series of blog posts, although I selfishly hope that does become a series of blog posts... that sounds like a whole book in the making.
