On December 8, 1980 I had just moved to Missoula, MT. I spent that evening with a nice, funny guy I had met on my last (archeology) field project for the season--really the only person I knew in Missoula. His name was Dave, but everyone called him "Drake." We had dinner at his apartment and listened to the radio remembering John Lennon.

It's always neat to hear how people remember a certain event in history. Was that your first date with Drake?

Well, Drake and I saw a lot of each other in the next year, but only as friends. Our first real date was about 8 months later... after the 1981 field season when we wound up working on different crews and didn't see each other the whole summer. I think we realized after the separation that our relationship was more than a friendship...
