12-tone without fear
We are still working our way through Bob Greenberg's concerto lectures. We are up to 20th century composers, which means grapling with 12-tone music. Greenberg encourages us to approach 12-tone compositions "without fear."
While I enjoy a huge range of 20th century music, 12-tone music is not near the top of my list. We attempted one Saturday to listen to Schoenberg's Moses und Aron on the Met's matinee broadcast and honestly, we just wound up turning it off.
But, I was really surprised to hear how just drop-dead beautiful Alban Berg's Violin Concerto is. Not at all what I would expect of a 12-tone composition. Just lovely.
